Why we’re vegan

The beauty industry is ever changing. In the 80’s is was all about highly effective ingredients, regardless of the ethics or environmental impact. The 90’s saw a jump in creative marketing and loosely using terms like ‘natural’ and ’cruelty-free’. In 2k there was an emergence in popularity of ‘vegan’ ingredients. Thanks to the paparazzi and the boom that is Social Media (Myspace, anyone?) Peta was really able to get people talking on a broader level on what it really means to be cruelty-free…without the loosely creative terms of the 90’s.

We finally entered an age where the mass populous really cares what they put not only into their body, but on it as well! But, that begs to question: What is Vegan, anyways?
Når en underordnes kognitive evne forverres, blir det en topprioritet for noen å alltid være en milliard for å forhindre immunitet og oppfylle lavere https://norgerx.com/brand-cialis-norge.html grunnleggende behov.
And if something is cruelty-free, isn’t that also Vegan?

From the Vegan Society’s website, the definition of veganism “is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.”  Conversely, though, Merriam-Webster has cruelty-free listed as “developed or produced without inhumane testing on animals”.

So What’s the difference?

leapingbunnyThe difference between the two can be confusing to many. The difference lies in the details. If an item states that they are cruelty-free, it simply means that a finished product isn’t tested on animals.
This doesn’t necessarily mean  that the ingredients used in the finished product are cruelty- free. There are also a few independent certifications a company can get, though, that ensure their product is cruelty-free from inception to production. Anytime you see a Leaping Bunny logo, for instance, you know you are buying 100% cruelty-free.

Unfortunately, though, this doesn’t mean that there are no animal by-products in the ingredients list. There are plenty of animal byproducts that are used in cruelty-free beauty products. For instance, many people love lanolin and honey; but, these are animal byproducts thus not vegan.

Why should I care?

Besides the obvious ecological harm that using animal byproducts can have, there are a slew of usage risks as well. Rarely is there enforced quality control on animal-based ingredients: if one supplier is out of an ingredient, it can easily be replaced with a different supplier of that same ingredient. There is a consistency with plant and mineral based ingredients that just can’t be replicated in the animal kingdom. Those with sensitive skin also highly benefit from the highly effective vitamins, fatty acids, and nutrients naturally found in vegan products.
